La Muela wind project consists of two wind farms, Plana de Jaretta and La Carracha, both located 15 km south west of Zaragoza in the region of Aragon. Each wind farm has an installed capacity of 49.5 MW and comprises 66 NEG Micon NM750-48 turbines rated at 750 kW with a hub of 55 m. The project is connected to the Red Electrica de España transmission network at Los Vientos 220 kV substation.
The project generates enough clean, green electricity to supply around 43,000 homes and help reduce reliance on existing less environmentally-friendly energy resources.
It is estimated that the project displaces up to 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year which would otherwise have been produced by a power station burning fossil fuel.
Construction of the wind farm started in 2002 and it began commercial operation in March 2003. NEG Micon, now Vestas, operates the wind farms under a long term operation and maintenance agreement.
Falck Renewables has a 26% investment in the wind farms and its other partner is BavWa AGShell Overseas Holdings Limited (40%).
